Climate Change

What is Climate Change?

Our Commitment to Sustainable Practices

Climate Change poses one of the greatest threats to marine and rainforest environments worldwide and presents a global issue requiring global action. Climate change is becoming a major threat to the biodiversity of the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics Rainforest. Global warming could decrease the habitat of many endemic vertebrate species which live in the rainforests, leaving only isolated pockets of rainforest for them to live in. It is predicted that seven frog species, five mammal species, three bird species and three skink species would lose over half their present habitat with only a 1ºC temperature increase.

The impacts of climate change which affect the Great Barrier Reef result from higher water temperatures and higher acidity of seawater. These could have a dramatic impact on coral growth and survival with the effects of Coral Bleaching due to rising sea temperatures currently evident in the Far North sections of the GBR Marine Park.

Cape York Motorcycle Adventure’s Sustainable Business Practices

  • Cape York Motorcycle Adventures have taken steps to tackle climate change by reducing our carbon emissions:
  • We minimise waste, recycle and use recycled products and materials whenever possible,
  • Our Motorcycle Fleet are serviced regularly to maintain optimum fuel efficiency,
  • Tour Activities have minimal impact on the environment,
  • We provide ongoing fundraising assistance to local conservation project Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre and support community fundraising events.

Cape York Motorcycle Adventures maintain Eco Tourism Certification. Ecotourism Australia’s national certification program recognises businesses that demonstrate sustainable tourism best practice and are taking active steps to reduce their carbon footprint and practice sustainable tourism.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Every year, more than one billion travellers cross international borders. Sustainable tourism can enable visitors’ actions to count and transform one billion travellers into one billion opportunities for sustainable development around the world.

Cape York Motorcycle Adventures encourage our guests to join us in:

Increasing environmental practices, such as using energy saving appliances, low energy bulbs, reduction of waste and litter and the use of environmentally friendly detergents into daily living.

Choosing to measure travel emissions through organisations such as Climate Friendly who provide emissions calculators and offsets which contribute to the growth of the renewable energy. www.climatefriendly.com.au

Supporting tour operators who display the Ecotourism Certification logo. Certification allows travelers to Australia to identify and support operators who meet the benchmark and so ensure tourism products have minimal impact to the environment.

Becoming involved and supporting the work of not for profit conservation organisations. Cape York Motorcycle Adventures undertakes fundraising for Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre who rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured marine turtles. Funds raised for the Centre provide for the turtles food bill and enables tourism businesses and their guests to engage with and support turtle conservation and research. www.cairnsturtlerehab.org.au

What you can do?

Cape York Peninsula

“The last of the great wild places on earth” (The Wilderness Society)

Cape York Peninsula is one of the last great wild places on earth. Covering an area nearly as big as the state of Victoria, it has characteristics and features that are of global, regional and national significance in respect of all eight natural heritage criteria, making it one of the last “untouched” tropical wildernesses in the world.

Cape York Peninsula is as important and rare as the Serengeti, the Congo and the Amazon. The vast natural woodlands, tropical rainforests, pristine rivers, uninhabited beaches, and coral reefs and cays are of global and national significance.

For the motorcyclist, Cape York offers every type of terrain you could find in Australia, (with the exception of snow and ice), and presents the rider with an unforgettable Australian remote wilderness adventure. Crocodiles, kangaroos, wild bush pigs, dingoes and native birdlife are all part of the Cape York experience; it really is “Australia in 8 days”!

As a certified Eco Tourism operator, Cape York Motorcycle Adventures has demonstrated that it is committed to maintaining ecologically sustainable tourism; its primary focus is on experiencing the wilderness areas of Cape York Peninsula and fostering environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation.

A World Heritage Tropical Wilderness

With an area of around 13.5 million ha, the Cape York Peninsula has, in effect, a continuous cover of tropical, native vegetation ecosystems. This is important for biodiversity conservation.

The Cape York Peninsula contains three globally significant bio-climatic domains, and a wide range of ecosystems that are well represented and relatively undisturbed by modern technology.

The area also contains many outstanding examples of bio-evolution, the record of life. Fossil locations documented throughout the Peninsula hold important evidence of Australia’s Gondwanic heritage.

The pristine streams and rivers of Cape York have been minimally disturbed by the works of human activity and contain a diversity of freshwater fish species which compares internationally with tropical catchments of similar size. The northern rivers have excellent Barramundi, providing both the experience and novice angler with a unique fishing experience.

The Traditional Owners of Cape York hold unique connections to Country and have a depth of ecological knowledge and management expertise vital to its protection. The region exhibits a long and intimate relationship between the Indigenous people and their environment.

The Cape York Peninsula is now a recognized landscape entity of global significance that provides a well defined and valued visitor experience revolving around the ‘wild’ natural landscape.
