Why Your Old Boots Might Ruin Your Ride: A Guide to Packing Right for Your Motorcycle Adventure

When you’re planning an epic off-road adventure through Cape York, there’s one piece of gear that often gets overlooked, your boots. We get it, they still look decent, they fit well, and they’ve been with you through a few good rides. But if they’ve been sitting in the shed for 4+ years? Trust us, they might not survive your first creek crossing.

We’ve had a fair few riders show up with old boots they haven’t worn in years. They’re pumped, geared up, ready to ride… until the first splash of water hits. The soles start to peel. Stitching comes apart. And suddenly, the only adventure they’re having is figuring out how to duct-tape their way to the next stop.

Adventure with wet feet? Let’s avoid that, yeah? ➡️ Follow our guide to packing for your motorcycle adventure 🥾.

Why Old Boots Break Down (Even If They Look Fine)

Rubber and glue degrade over time, especially if they’ve been exposed to heat, humidity, or left unused for long periods. That trusty pair of boots from your last ride in 2017? They’re likely dry-rotted underneath. The problem isn’t always visible, until you’re halfway through a rainforest trail with soggy socks and a flapping sole.

This is especially true in the demanding terrain of Far North Queensland. Creek crossings, deep mud, loose rocks, and tropical heat will push every bit of your gear to its limit.

How to Pack for Adventure Riding: Boots & Beyond

If you’re wondering how to pack for adventure riding, here’s a tip: start with the essentials, then go lighter than you think. We provide full riding gear, including off-road boots suited our off-road motorcycle tours. But if you prefer using your own, make sure they meet the following checklist.

✅ Checklist if you want to pack your own boots:

  • Less than 4 years old!!
  • No visible signs of cracking, dry rot, or separating soles
  • Waterproof or water-resistant
  • High ankle support with strong buckles or fasteners

Travel Light, ride Free

When it comes to your motorcycle trip checklist, less is more. We’ve dialled in this tour over 35+ years: everything from support vehicles to spares and safety is sorted. So, unless your boots are battle-ready, it’s often better to use our gear and save space (and headaches). You can also buy our Pre-ride checklist on our shop.

Not sure if yours will hold up? No worries, bring them along. You can always swap to our boots before the ride begins. We’ve got you covered.

Bottom Line: Don’t Let Your Boots Be the Weak Link

You’re coming for the ride of a lifetime. The last thing you want is for your old gear to call it quits before you even hit the Tip. Whether you’re ticking off a bucket list or reigniting your love for riding after a few years off, your gear needs to be as ready as you are.
